Swimmer Kyle Micallef impressed at the NCAA Swimming Championships, in the United States, after winning the 50-yard freestyle in a record 19.28, last week.
The Australian native, who represented Malta in last year’s GSSE, outswam his opponents, besting second place by 0.05.
This was Micallef’s first ever national title in the US, having finished 9th in the 100-y freestyle final in 43.55.
In the process, Micallef set a new Sunshine State Conference and FSC program record.
The senior has dominated sprint events at the team and conference level throughout his career and placed eighth in last year’s 50-y free NCAA finals.
A 16-time All-American, Micallef made it to the A final three years in a row and earned his fourth-straight NCAA appearance after his automatic qualification time of 19.48 set at the Panther Invitational.
At this year’s SSC Championships, Micallef won the 50-y free and placed second in the 100-y free, while adding three relay titles to earn his third All-SSC honor of his career.
In last year’s GSSE, Micallef won gold after finishing first in the 50m race in 22.68.
