Stefan Debattista’s Geisha clinched the overall victory in the Royal Malta Yacht Club Gozo Weekend, with just a single point separating him from Sean Borg’s Jubatus, who in turn was just one point ahead of third-placed Ottovolante, skippered by John Cachia West.
The RMYC Gozo Weekend welcomed a large fleet of racing and cruising boats converging for a weekend filled with racing and a vibrant social programme in Gozo. Kicking off the weekend was a passage race to Gozo on Saturday, with Ottovolante clinching victory. Sunday’s agenda featured a race around Gozo, ultimately won by Geisha. On Monday, the action continued with a Round Filfla race, which was conquered by Ralph Landwehr’s Miame Too. Wrapping up the weekend was the return race to Marsamxett, where victory was sealed by Jubatus.
In the IRC Cruisers’ Class, David Anastasi’s Pippus took first place, one point ahead of Godwin Zammit’s Inspiration. Mario Debono’s Janissah took home the trophy for third place.
The RMYC Cruisers’ Class was won by Gozo Dream, skippered by Noel Grech. Gozo Dream two of the four races, with Gino Cutajar’s Kira winning the first race and Peter Delia’s Cru winning the third race. The RMYC Cruising class is designed for boats who may not be focused on competitive racing but still want to enjoy the experience of being out on the water with other sailing enthusiasts.
“The Gozo Weekend proved to be a successful event, combining good weather conditions which ranged from 5 to 20 knots of wind and a good social after-sailing programme, which is the perfect opportunity for crews to mingle on land,” said Adrian Gauci Borda, Rear Commodore (Sailing) Royal Malta Yacht Club.
Trophies were presented to winners during a prize-giving afternoon which took place at the Royal Malta Yacht Club at the end of the RMYC Gozo Weekend. The Club expressed its gratitude to Martin Azzopardi and Michelle Caruana for overseeing Race Management duties as well as all the volunteers who contributed towards the success of the event.
The Club is now gearing up for the International Yacht Paints Marzamemi Regatta which will take place between May 3 and 5 and will be the Club’s first offshore race for the 2024 season.
