Maltese weightlifting sensation Tenishia Thornton could be heading to the Olympic Games in Paris this summer after finishing fifth at the IWF weightlifting World Cup in Phuket Thailand.
Thornton competed in her final qualification for the Olympic Games on Friday and had a remarkable performance in the 64A category, lifting 84kg, 87kg, and 90kg in Snatch, and 104kg, 109kg, and 111kg in Clean and Jerk, while setting three new national records.
In the finals, Thornton, the youngest athlete in the competition, placed fifth, following athletes from North Korea and Ukraine.
The results of the 64kg category will count towards the 71kg Olympic category, which will be concluded on Saturday. Only the top 10 athletes in the world will advance to the Olympic finals.
Thornton also achieved commendable results in the 59kg category and hopes to secure a spot in the Olympics. However, one will have to wait until the final list is published. Nevertheless, after her successful performance, she remains optimistic about earning a place in the Olympics.
In action on Saturday is Roberta Tabone, who will be competing in the 71D Category at 9:00 am in Phuket.
