Steve Borg said that Ħamrun Spartans are determined to go for the kill in Saturday’s ‘title decider’ against Floriana after the Malta champions returned to the top of the Premier League after they beat Santa Lucia 4-1 and their rivals Floriana suffered a 1-0 defeat to Marsaxlokk.

That left Ħamrun Spartans at the top of the standings on 55 points, one clear of Floriana setting up a winner-takes-all clash on Saturday between the two title protagonists.

The past few weeks have been anything but easy for the Spartans as after their shock defeat to Marsaxlokk which saw them lose top spot in the standings, also crashed out of the FA Trophy at the hands of Birkirkara.

Three wins on the trot kept the Spartans in the title race but it was not easy as they lost a number of key players due to injury and suspension.

“During the past weeks, we faced a lot of difficulties but we kept fighting,” skipper Steve Borg told Times of Malta.

“After the defeat to Marsaxlokk, we knew that we had five finals ahead of us and if we won every match we would be crowned champions once again. So far we played three matches and have managed to win them all. It was not easy because we have lost some key players but at Ħamrun Spartans we are blessed to have a very long bench and those who came in did a brilliant job.

“There are two matches left and our goal is very clear – win both matches. On Saturday we are not thinking about playing for a draw… we want to go out and take all the three points, nothing more and nothing less.”

Borg said that the fact that many players in the Ħamrun Spartans squad have experience of winning the league title could be an advantage for his side.

“Many players in our squad have already experienced a tight title race so we know what we need to do to keep the trophy at our club,” Borg said.

“Every football match has its own story and I hope that on Saturday we will have our fans behind us once more as they are crucial for us. They have been behind us since the first day and their passion will no doubt push the team to get the win.”
