Ħamrun Spartans have announced that they have parted ways with coach Luciano Zauri.
The Malta champions issued a statement announcing that the Italian coach had declined the offer to extend his contract for another season.
“Mr Luciano Zauri informed the club that it is not his intention to extend his current contract with the club,” the statement said.
“He was the club’s natural choice and the news followed several attempts by the club’s president to retain him as the Head Coach for the coming season 2024-25.
“We would like to take the opportunity to thank Mr Zauri and his hard work and commitment and his immense contribution to elevate the professional and technical standards for the senior team. All those who had the opportunity to know him could admire and appreciate his integrity, simplicity and modesty in carrying out his duties.”
The Spartans had contributed in no small measure to winning the Super Cup and the Premier League title.
“He contributed in no small measure to winning the Super Cup and the Championship. He will surely be remembered for the convincing wins and superlative performances against Birkirkara in the Super Cup final (4-0) and the League ‘decider’ against Floriana (5-0) and the home (2-1) and away wins (1-0) against Dinamo Tbilisi in the second round of the Conference League,” the club said.
“But above all he will always be remembered for winning the 10th Championship for the club, putting the Star (representing the 10 Championships) on the official jersey from now onwards.
“For this reason, Mr Zauri will have the honour to be referred to as “The Coach of the Star:”
The Spartans gave no information on who could replace him at the helm of the first team but it is understood that the club’s top hierarchy have been scouring the market to find a replacement.
In fact, during the past few days the club have sounded out the availability of a number of coaches both in Malta and abroad, should Zauri decline the club’s offer.
