Trap Shooter Gianluca Chetcuti is the first Maltese athlete that had his place confirmed for the forthcoming Olympic Games that will be held in Paris.
The Maltese Olympic Committee issued a statement that announced that the GSSE gold medallist has been notified that he will be forming part of Team Malta which will represent the country during the quadriennial Games between July 26 and August 11.
Chetcuti was selected through the Universality Places programme assigned by the Olympic Games Tripartite Commission which has sole discretion on the choice of an athlete.
However, his selection is based on the athlete’s international competitive experience, their technical level and the willingness to qualify for the Olympic Games by participating in the relevant qualifying events in the past few months.
Chetcuti has been showing promising form in the past few months and came agonisingly close to winning an Olympic quota during the ISSF World Cup shoot that was held in Doha earlier this year.
On that occasion, Chetcuti put on a strong performance as after finishing second in the qualifying phase of the competition, he just missed out on a place on the podium.
In fact, Chetcuti ended in fourth place in the final.
At present, Chetcuti, is currently ranked 68 in the world according to the ISSF list.
