The Maltese Olympic Committee (MOC) is in the final preparations for the forthcoming National Lottery Olympic Day celebrations on Sunday.
The local governing body of elite sport will be joining other National Olympic Committees worldwide to celebrate this annual event, dedicated to promoting the Olympic values of excellence, friendship, and respect.
A programme of events will take place around the Maltese Olympic Committee’s headquarters at Tal-Qroqq which will be a hive of activity revolving around sport, entertainment, and educational activities targeted at people of all ages.
In collaboration with over 20 affiliated federations, the National Lottery Olympic Day will feature an array of activities, providing the public with the opportunity to watch demonstrations, participate in educational activities, and try their hand at new sports.
The traditional 5km and 1km fun run will kickstart the activities, with over 200 individuals set to take part.
The programme of events includes badminton, bridge, breakdancing, chess, cricket, football, judo, karate, netball, rhythmic gymnastics, rowing, table football, table tennis, taekwondo, triathlon, waterpolo, weightlifting, wheelchair basketball, and wrestling.
Wheelchair basketball will again be included in this year’s activities as part of the MOC’s commitment to ensure that sport is accessible to everyone, regardless of physical ability.
Additionally, the day will feature several educational initiatives, including videos on the history of the MOC and the GSSE, as well as the opportunity to meet Maltese Olympians.
A scavenger hunt, designed to entertain and educate participants about the Olympic movement, will also take place.
Families can embark on this adventure, solving clues and discovering hidden treasures around the venue. For history enthusiasts, an interactive exhibit showcasing the rich history of the MOC and Malta’s participation in the Olympic Games will be available, offering a fascinating glimpse into the nation’s sporting heritage.
“The National Lottery Olympic Day is the perfect opportunity for us to celebrate the spirit of the Olympics and encourage everyone to experience the joy that sport gives us,” said Julian Pace Bonello, President of the Maltese Olympic Committee.
“We are excited to see the community come together to embrace the Olympic values and participate in the wide range of activities we have planned. We also thank all federations who accepted our invitation to participate in Olympic Day.”
The 2024 Olympic Day is supported by the National Lottery.
The event is free and open to the public and will be held between 7am to 11am.
All those planning to attend on Sunday are encouraged to wear comfortable sports attire and come prepared for a day of active fun.
