The Malta women’s basketball national team made it three wins out of three at the FIBA Women’s European Championship for Small Countries when they battled past Cyprus 82-71 in their final in group match in Pristina.
It was a hard-fought victory for Charles Bonnici’s girls who needed extra-time to overcome the fierce challenge of Cyprus and finish top of their group. Their reward is a semi-final clash against Albania on Saturday and a shot to a place on the podium.
Malta started brightly and they managed to hold the edge over their opponents for much of the opening two quarters to head into the half-time interval 34-29 ahead.
The Cypriots rallied in the second half of the match as they edged closer to just three points with just one quarter to go.
Malta looked in control for much of the final quarter as their defensive play looked to have denied the Cypriots however, a three pointer from Sofia Sttylianidi levelled the match at 69-all to force extra-time.
Here, Malta kept their poise and dominated overtime as they outpointed their opponents with the two Galeas, Danika and Kristy, coming to the fore as Malta went on a 13-0 scoring run to seal the win.
