German police said Sunday they had identified a man who climbed onto the roof of the stadium during Germany’s last-16 clash against Denmark at Euro 2024.
The man seen wandering in the rafters at the Westfalen stadium in Dortmund was a 21-year-old from Osnabrueck in northeast Germany, local police said in a statement.
“There is currently no evidence that the man intended to endanger the stadium guests with his behaviour,” police said.
Authorities said on Saturday evening they had spotted the man on the roof during the game and were using a helicopter to illuminate the roof.
Police were able to arrest the climber after the final whistle was blown in the game, which Germany won 2-0.
The tie was interrupted in the first half due to bad weather, as the stadium was struck by torrential rain and lightning.
According to the German daily Bild, a rucksack carried by the intruder contained photo and video equipment.
According to Bild, investigators suspected the man was following an online trend, in which people climb tall buildings unsecured and film themselves in the process to later post the images on social media.
