Chetcuti produces inconsistent showing on final day of trap qualifiers to finish 29th overall

Gianluca Chetcuti produced a mixed performance on the final day of trap qualifiers at the Paris Olympics.

After an inconsistent showing in Monday’s qualifiers, the Maltese shooter was always up against it for a top-six placing in the competition that would earn him an historic place in the final.

Starting the day on 69 clays, Chetcuti showed his immense talent when notching a straight, hitting all 25 clays, in the fourth round.

However, in the fifth and final round Chetcuti seemed to lose his focus as he only managed to hit 21 from 25 clays to complete his commitments with a modest score of 116 points.

That left him just one place off bottom of the standings, two clear of Oman shooter Said Al Khatri.

Four shooters finished joint-top of the standings, with China’s Ying Qi, Nathan Hales, of Great Britain, Rickard Levin-Andersson, of Sweden, and Australia’s James Willett on 123 points.

The usual story. Unless Maltese athletes sacrifice the comforts in Malta and live and train abroad they will never make the grade.
