Sliema Wanderers are the winners of the inaugural Pre-Season Summer Cup when they defeated Malta champions Ħamrun Spartans 2-1 in the final at the National Stadium.
The Blues, who reached the final after ousting Old Firm rivals Floriana in a penalty shoot-out, took the lead after eight minutes when Geoffrey Acheampong did brilliantly to turn past his marker and fire a firm drive that had the better of Ħamrun Spartans goalkeeper Celio.
The Spartans’ response failed to arrive as the match remained devoid of scoring opportunities.
Sliema made another fast start to the second half when four minutes after restart they were awarded a penalty for a handball infringement by Joseph Mbong inside his area.
From the spot Murilo Henrique made no mistake to double his side’s lead.
The Spartans kept pushing in search of a goal that would re-open the match. However, they only managed to pull a goal back through a firm drive by Raphael Lopes Silva in time added on.
In the end, it was Sliema who held on to their advantage to gain a psychological boost ahead of the start of the 2024-25 Premier League campaign against Mosta on Friday.
