The second slate of fixtures of the Assikura Women’s League will immediately pit two of this year’s title contenders against each other in Hibernians and Mġarr United.
The Paolites and Greens are at the back of two important victories which allowed them to launch this 2024/2025 campaign on a high.
Hibernians, under coach Kenneth Costantino, fended off Swieqi United to win 2-0, with captain Martina Borg and defender Natalee Geren scoring the winning goals.
Borg’s goal was the 100th scored in the second-half in the women’s league, in 2024.
On the other hand, Mġarr – coached by Ryan Vella – dismantled Mtarfa 14-0 with forward Yulya Carella scoring five goals in this match – the only player to score more than three goals on opening day.
One of the other scorers was Brenda Borg, who scored a hat-trick, with her first goal being the 100th scored in the first-half in the women’s league, in 2024.
The two teams handed debuts to their new signings with the Paolites having American goalkeeper Elizabeth Harrington between the sticks while Mġarr having the Villegas sisters, Alejandra and Valeria, in the starting line-up.
Wingback Ileana Farrugia also made her debut for Hibernians while Argentine defender Yanina Mendez featured from the start for Mġarr, having joined the Greens this summer.
Champions Birkirkara launch Matchday 2 when they face Lija Athletic, on Thursday.
The Stripes secured a comfortable win over San Ġwann last weekend and will be looking to follow up with another victory before setting sights on their UEFA Women’s Champions League qualifications.
Vince Galea’s team had several new faces in the team including foreign players Luana Cabral, Yuna Hazekawa and Calista Schechinger who all found the net against San Ġwann.
Dorianne Theuma’s Swieqi will be looking to bounce back from their Hibernians defeat when they take on Valletta.
The Citizens, on their part, were held by Lija to a 1-1 draw in their opening game.
