Hibernians, the new Assikura Women’s League leaders, will be aiming to extend their positive start to the season as they take on San Ġwann, this weekend.
Last Friday, the Paolites claimed a significant narrow victory over reigning champions Birkirkara, which put them as sole leaders of the championship.
Led by coach Kenneth Costantino, Hibernians have won four of their five opening games as they sit first with 13 points.
Six of the goals Hibs have produced so far were grabbed by Brazilian Joelma, who sits second in the league’s scoring charts.
San Ġwann, coached by Julian Camilleri, are sixth with six points after recording two victories from their five league outings so far.
American forward Hailey Russell has been one of the team’s key players, having already scored six goals since joining the club in the summer transfer window.
Birkirkara, now coached by Vince Galea, will be eager to bounce back to winning ways against Valletta.
Last week’s setback meant that the Stripes are now second, trailing Hibernians by three points.
One of Birkirkara’s two goals against Hibernians was scored by midfielder Luana Cabral, who is the team’s joint best scorer with captain Alishia Cassar – both on four goals.
Mġarr United, whose forward Yulya Carella is the league’s best scorer with seven goals so far, sit third on nine points – together with Swieqi United.
The Greens will face Lija Athletic, who are fifth on six points, while the Owls take on Mtarfa – the only team without a single point after five league matchdays.
Ghana player Karima Abdulai is currently Swieqi’s best scorer after five matches, with four goals.
