Qala Saints, Xewkija Tigers and Xagħra United all obtained a win from their respective matches of the weekend so that the three teams remain unbeaten.
Sunday’s match between Qala and Xewkija will determine the hierarchy of the teams who would challenge for the main honour.
Qala Saints continued to dictate matters in the top-flight as they took the full points at stake from a 2-0 win over reigning champions Nadur Youngsters and remain the only team of the category with maximum points from three matches, although Xagħra have a game in hand.
This was Qala’s second win over Nadur this season as the Maroons already defeated the Youngsters in the opening match of the season to lift the Super Cup.
In this match Qala saw more of the ball but Nadur protected their area during the first half and the actions on goal were quite rare.
Qala, however, opened the score through an overhead kick by Angel Manuel Bustos on 53 minutes. Nadur’s reaction was sterile and the Maroons made sure of the win when Junior Adenilson Ferreira Dos Santos headed in on 81 minutes.
Xewkija Tigers came from behind to register their second win of the campaign by defeating Għajnsielem with the odd goal in three.
The two sides were aiming for the win as Xewkija earned just one point in their previous match while Għajnsielem needed to make up for the defeat conceded in their last match.
The Blacks were more dangerous during the first part and took the lead on 25 minutes with a fine shot by Deacon Attard.
Xewkija had a good reaction and turned the result in their favour with two goals that arrived before the break from a penalty, awarded for a foul on Brian Parada and converted by the same player on 39 minutes and a low shot by Claudio Frances two minutes later.
Għajnsielem tried hard to recover the deficit but they compromised their possibility to save the result on 66 minutes when they had Marcus Vinicius sent off for a second bookable offence.
Xagħra United came from behind to clinch a 3-2 win over SK Victoria Wanderers to consolidate their positive start in the championship and stay in touch with the top positions.
This was Victoria’s second defeat in the campaign and are still without a point from their first two matches.
The match was quite balanced and the outcome was uncertain.
The Wanderers put their heads in front on 31 minutes through a header by Igor Henrique but failed to capitalise from a good patch of play and ended up conceding the equaliser on 44 minutes through Johan Alberto Castano.
Xagħra grew in confidence and took the lead on 53 minutes with a fine strike from outside the area by Jack Vella.
Xagħra increased their lead with another goal scored by Castano on 65 minutes but during the final stages the Wanderers staged a strong reaction.
The Citizens reduced the deficit on 85 minutes through a header by David Garba and missed an open scoring opportunity seconds from the final whistle when Da Silva Costa hit badly from close in.
