The Maltese Schools team has emerged victorious at the World School Games Football Cup in Barcelona, securing the Under-11 championship with an impressive record.
The team, comprised of 10-year-old primary students from various Maltese state and non-state schools, showcased exceptional skill and teamwork throughout the tournament.
Held from October 11 and 14 at the Mediterranean Sport Village in Barcelona, the event brought together 900 students from around the globe.
Malta’s young athletes demonstrated their strength by winning all four matches on the opening day and maintaining their perfect record through the final.
Maltese player Zian Farrugia was awarded the Player of the Tournament title, further highlighting the team’s outstanding performance.
This achievement underscores Malta’s dedication to youth sports development, rooted in the successful Interschools Football Festivals organised by the MEYR Centre for PE & Sport within the Directorate for STEM and VET Programmes.
The Ministry for Education, Sport, Youth, Research and Innovation fully supported this initiative, and the participation of all the students and the coaches in this football championship, in which Malta participated for the first time.
This commitment aligns with the National Education Strategy 2024-2030 to nurture the unique talents of every individual.
Indeed, the team’s flawless performance showcases individual talent and also underscores the effectiveness of Malta’s youth football programmes on an international stage.
