Valencia league match at Espanyol postponed after floods

Valencia’s La Liga match at Espanyol, due to be played on Saturday, was postponed by the Spanish football federation after devastating floods in the east of Spain.

“The decision relates to the situation generated by the (storm), which has left a number of fatalities yet to be determined and numerous material damages,” said the federation in a statement Wednesday.

Last week an exceptional storm killed at least 219 people, almost all in the Valencia region, as well as leaving a trail of destruction.

Valencia had asked for the match to be postponed, after having their previous La Liga game against Real Madrid pushed back too, as well as a Copa del Rey first round match at Parla Escuela.

“At this moment in time, football is secondary and all efforts should be directed towards those affected by the tragic consequences of the (storm), to whom Valencia would like to express their deepest condolences and support,” said the club in a statement.

In the second division, Levante — another club based in the city of Valencia — were granted a postponement for their match at Tenerife.
