Andrew Cohen stepped down as coach of Gżira United, the Times of Malta can confirm.
The former Malta international took the decision after a meeting with club president Sharlon Pace and an agreement was reached that for the good of the club, both parties should go separate ways.
Cohen’s departure from Gżira United arrived just two days after the Maroons suffered a heart-breaking 2-1 defeat to Ħamrun Spartans in the 360 Sports Malta Premier at the Tedesco Stadium that condemned the team to play in the Bottom Six during the second phase of the Opening Round.
Gżira United finished level on points with the Spartans on 14 points but the Reds booked their place in the Top Six due their superior head-to-head record.
Contacted by the Times of Malta Cohen said that it was a tough decision to leave Gżira United but felt that it was the right move both for him and the club.
“The defeat to Ħamrun Spartans was a bitter pill to swallow for me,” Cohen said.
“Today, I met with the president Sharlon Pace and we agreed that it would be the best for both parties that we go separate ways. The team played some good football in the first part of the championship but we failed to get positive results consistently and I feel the time is right to leave and let someone else lead the club and hopefully infuse some fresh ideas to lead the club forward.”
Cohen has been at the helm of Gżira United since last January where he managed to help the Maroons avoid relegation at the end of last season.
Last summer, Cohen strengthened the team with a number of new signings and managed to make a bright start to the campaign.
However, in recent weeks, Gżira United struggled to get positive results to put their chances of a Top Six finish in jeopardy.
A 3-1 win over Żabbar St Patrick put Gżira United needed just a point from their match against Ħamrun Spartans to seal their Top Six place.
They looked on their way when Alex Alves put them on their way early in the second half.
However, Gżira United lost their way in the final minutes of the match as they conceded two goals in the final four minutes of the match that condemned them to a place in the Bottom Six.
