Lydan Debono handed Malta its third gold medal at the World Blackpool Championship that came to an end at St Paul’s Bay yesterday.
Debono used all his experience to see of English player Dean Shields 10-5 in the final to secure a well-deserved title crown.
It was a stunning performance from the Maltese player who recovered from a sloppy start to the match, as he managed to keep his composure to gradually pull himself back into the match and then motor home to a convincing victory to the delight of the sizeable crowd present.
It looked as though Debono was set for a tough after losing the opening two opening frames in the best of 19 frames final.
But the Maltese player kept his poise and managed to turn the game around when he won five frames in a row to leave Shields reeling.
The English player managed to stop the rot when winning the eighth frame.
But that was just a temporary reprieve as Debono claimed the next three frames to surge 8-3 ahead.
Nerves started to somewhat effect Debono when leading 9-4 ahead as he saw his opponents pulling four frames behind.
But Debono was not to be denied with a fine table clearance in the 15th frame to seal a 10-5 victory.
