Sports Unity kicked off its first major fundraiser for cancer research with a memorable gala evening drawing widespread support from Malta’s football community.

This inaugural event brought together representatives from eight clubs across the Malta Premier League and Challenge League, showcasing a collective commitment to making a positive impact on society.

The initiative, a project of Ħamrun Ħanin, also received backing from the Malta Football Association (MFA), the Malta Premier League (MPL) and the Malta Football Players Association (MFPA).

Sports Unity’s primary goal is to harness the power of sport to make a meaningful difference in society. The first project focuses on supporting cancer research, in collaboration with RIDT, University of Malta’s research fund. This project highlights the commitment to channel the influence of sports towards causes that benefit the broader community.

During the event, held at Giardini Lambrosa in Rabat, participants had the exclusive opportunity to see the brand-new Mobile Laboratory of the Cancer Research and Innovation Hub Malta.

This state-of-the-art facility, which is being supported by Parliamentary Secretary for Research and Innovation, Keith Azzopardi Tanti, will play a crucial role in advancing the cancer research project that lies at the core of the Sports Unity initiative.

Speaking at the event, Ian Debattista, Chairman of Ħamrun Ħanin, emphasised the unifying power of sports.

“Sport has a unique role in bringing people together across cultures, backgrounds and communities. It is a powerful platform for unity and collaboration towards common goals” he said.

“Our objective is to extend the success of this  social initiative by bringing all football clubs and eventually other sports towards a common objective, that of contributing to the community around us”.
