Giovanni Tedesco is the new Gżira United coach, the Times of Malta can confirm.
The Italian coach started the season in Qatar where he was at the helm of Al-Mesaimeer. But when the opportunity of returning to club management in Malta materialised, the 52-year-old decided to come back to Maltese football.
At Gżira United, Tedesco will be filling the void left by Andrew Cohen who stepped down from his post last week after his team’s 2-1 defeat to Ħamrun Spartans that ended the team’s hopes of securing a spot in the Top Six.
Gżira finished level on points with the sixth-placed Spartans on 14 points but missed out on their head-to-head record.
For Tedesco, this is set to be his second spell in charge at Gżira United as the Italian coach was in charge of the Maroons in season 2019-20 season.
The Italian masterminded one of the club’s most memorable qualifications in the UEFA Europa League as Gżira United knocked out Croatian giants Hajduk Split.
Tedesco has already agreed terms with Gżira United and signed his contract on Wednesday.
The former Palermo midfielder is set to make his first appearance as first-team coach at Gżira United this season
