Gżira wingback Dias heads to St Andrews; Scerri set to sign for Floriana

Marcelo Dias has left Gżira United to join Challenge League side St Andrews.

Gżira United have lost two first-team players in the past few days as Zack Scerri has agreed to join Floriana while wingback Marcelo Dias is heading to St Andrews.

Scerri has been a major player for the Maroons in the past few seasons and was handed the captain’s armband this season.

However, when Floriana came knocking on the door for his signature the opportunity to rejoin his former mentor Darren Abdilla proved too tempting for the versatile midfielder who accepted to join the Greens.

Gżira United on Monday issued a statement to bid farewell for the hardworking Scerri.

“We would like to thank our captain, Zach Scerri, for his incredible contributions to the team!,” Gżira United said in a statement.

“While we’re sad to see him go, we know he’s in good hands at Floriana FC. Wishing you all the best in your next chapter, Zach thank you for everything!”

The 28-year-old Scerri has been at Gżira United for almost eight years after coming through the youth ranks of Hibernians.

On the other hand, veteran wing back Marcelo Dias is also parting ways with Gżira United and is set to complete a move to Challenge League side St Andrews.

Sources told the Times of Malta, that the player has been offered a two-year contract and will also have the opportunity to work with the club’s academy.

The former Floriana wingback issued on statement on Monday to announce his departure from Gżira United.

“Thank you Gzira United Football Club for these 2 years! I am very happy to have played for this great team, a team who respected me both as a player and as a person,” Dias said.

“A big thank you goes to the president Sharlon, Alex his right hand, Clyde Pace, coaches, the committee and the incredible supporters who most of them became friends!

“Wish Gzira all the best and to win more honours in the coming future.”
