The Maltese Billiards and Snooker fraternity woke up to the tragic news of the passing of their governing body honorary president Frans Bugeja at the age of 88 years.
Bugeja has been a key component in the development of cue sport in Malta as he served in various roles at the Malta Billiards and Snooker Association for more than 50 years.
In 2022, Bugeja was honoured by the Maltese Olympic Committee after being inducted in its Hall of Fame for his contribution to Maltese sport.
On Sunday, the MBSA issued a statement to pay tribute to their honorary president for their immense contribution towards the development of the disciplines of snooker and billiards.
“With Heavy Hearts, We Say Goodbye to a True Gentleman!,” the Malta Billiards and Snooker Association said in a statement.
“It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of the Honorary President of the Malta Billiards & Snooker Association, Frans Bugeja, at the age of 88.
“Frans dedicated over 50 years of his life to our Association and the game of snooker, always serving with passion, integrity, and kindness. He was not only a remarkable leader but also a true gentleman who touched the lives of many.
“Our deepest condolences go out to his beloved wife, Odette, and his family during this difficult time.
“Rest in peace, Frans. You will be dearly missed. Thank you!”
Sport Malta CEO Mark Cutajar was among the first to heap praise on Bugeja’s contribution to Maltese sport and singled out his values of altruism and respect towards everyone during his career in sports administration.
“There are some posts that you do not want to write ever,” Cutajar wrote on his facebook page.
“A great gentleman, a true person who loved sport and one of my biggest supporters in work and in my personal life passed away. Rest in peace Frans Bugeja
“From you I learnt many values amongst many altruism, respect and peacefulness were virtues you lived.
“So glad that together we managed to build a dream for Malta Billiards & Snooker Association – MBSA, the snooker academy.
“Deepest Condolences to his wife and two his daughter and son. Your Dad was simply special.”
