George Vella will continue as coach of Naxxar Lions after the Premier League club announced that they had turned down his resignation on Tuesday night.
Vella had offered his resignation as head coach of Naxxar Lions through a letter sent to the club’s committee following Monday’s 3-0 defeat to relegation rivals Balzan that left the team at the bottom of the standings with no points from five matches.
Vella’s resignation was discussed during Tuesday’s night meeting and the club announced that they have no plans to part ways with Vella as they have full confidence in their first-team coach to manage to turn around the club’s fortunes.
“Coach George Vella has offered to step down in light of recent results,” the club said in a statement.
“However, the club firmly believes in his dedication and commitment to Naxxar Lions FC cause and has not accepted his resignation.
“We will continue working together to improve performance on the pitch and achieve our objectives.”
Vella has been at the helm of Naxxar Lions for the four and a half years and during the spell has helped the Lions to return to the Premier League.
Last year, under his charge, Naxxar were the surprise package as they came close to challenging for a place in European football and ended the campaign in sixth place.
