Maltese football lost another legendary player following the death of former Hibernians defender Louis Theobald at the age of 86.
The talented defender was a mainstay in the Hibernians side in the 1950s and 1960s and helped the club to win their first-ever league title, an FA Trophy and two Cassar Cup triumphs.
Theobald was also the first player from Hibernians who managed to win the prestigious Player of the Year award in season 1959-60.
“It is with great sadness that Hibernians FC announces the passing of Louis Theobald, a legendary defender and cherished member of our football family,” Hibernians FC said in a statement.
“Born on July 20, 1938, Louis rose through the club’s junior ranks making his league debut on May 6, 1955, against Sliema Wanderers.
“As captain, he missed only two matches in seven remarkable seasons, leading Hibernians to their first-ever league title, an FA Trophy, and two Cassar Cup victories.
“Louis was the first ever Hibs player to win the prestigious MFA Footballer of the Year award in the 1959/60 season. He also earned four caps for the Malta national team. Louis’ legacy will forever remain a cornerstone of Hibernians FC and Maltese football.”
The Malta FA also issued a statement to salute Theobald’s contribution to the ‘Beautiful Game’ in Malta.
“The Malta FA is deeply saddened by the passing of Louis Theobald, a true icon of Maltese football. A formidable defender and leader, Louis made history with Hibernians FC, guiding them to their first-ever league title and earning the prestigious MFA Footballer of the Year award in 1959/60. He also had the honour of representing Malta at the international level,” it said in a statement.
“His contribution to local football will never be forgotten. Our heartfelt condolences go out to his family, friends, and the Hibernians FC community.”
