Back in May 2024, the Ħamrun Spartans achieved an impressive landmark victory. For the tenth time, they were able to secure the Maltese Premier League title. But it wasn’t easy. In fact, the final match that saw the team secure the trophy, a game against Hibernians, resulted in a draw of 1-1. Luckily, this was enough to secure them the title they already knew was coming their way.
The final game
As such, the game itself was of little importance. The team and the fans knew that the title was theirs unless a major upset occurred.
And this was due to the mathematical certainty of a second successful title (points difference, goals scored, etc) after beating their closest rivals for the title, Floriana, in a 5-0 rout of epic proportions. Despite this, the team were still keen to have a strong show in the game.
For this final, they did just that. In the first five minutes of the match, the team took control and scored a goal right then and there.
However, the Hibernians were not so easily cowed and did come back just before half-time with a goal from their side.
Once the half-time was over, the two teams came together again with force. In fact, there was more to play for, for Hibernians than there was for the Spartans. This was evidenced by the way Hibs charged forward at the off.
For them, they could jump a place higher in the table if they could take the win. But for Hibernians, it was not to be, as the stalemate continued and ended the game.
For the Spartans, though, it was a great ending to the season. And this was topped off by the league trophy handed to the club captain, Steve Borg, by the MFA president. This then enabled the team and the fans to start the epic Spartans title party.
Fan Involvement in Every Moment
These tight finishes and unpredictable match days are exactly what keep fans deeply invested.
The drama of the final weeks in football reminds of a quick game of fast keno live — every second matters, and a small outcome can shift everything.
Football may unfold over 90 minutes, but in this league, fortunes can change in an instant.
Fans are more engaged than ever, tracking scores, celebrating small victories, and riding the emotional rollercoaster alongside their team.
Can the Spartans do it again in 2025?
While last year and the claiming of a tenth trophy saw the Spartans achieve back-to-back victories, the next goal is to claim it for a third year in a row. But is this possible, given the competition?
This year, already in April, the competition is fierce. Hamrun Spartans and Birkirkara are the leaders, and there is currently no margin for error if either side wants to maintain a serious challenge for the 360 Sports Malta Premier League title. As April hits the midway point, things are coming to a close, and it’s the decisive stage with the Top Six and Top Bottom really getting into things.
For the Top Six, it’s going to be a thrilling ride. In the first week of April, all six teams were separated by just two points. Floriana and Birkirkara are at the top, while Hamrun Spartans are down in sixth, giving them the most work to do.
Every point counts in this second phase as these games take place. And luckily for the Spartans, they’ve already passed that first hurdle.
After taking on Birkirkara at the beginning of the month, Spartans came out the victors in a 1-0 win over their rivals, denting Birkirkara’s chances but significantly boosting their own.
Of course, some of the biggest games are still to come for the Hamrun team. In the next few weeks, the team will be facing off against Mosta and Floriana, both of which will potentially change the way things are looking for the team. It does make for exciting watching, as this could turn everything around for any team at this point going forward.
