Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher was among the standout figures in Malta during the recent men’s international window, as he attended both of Malta’s matches to support his son, James Carragher, who was making his debut for the national team.
James, who has recently acquired a Maltese passport due to his family’s origins, played the entirety of both games, proudly representing his ancestral homeland.
Jamie Carragher’s grandfather, Paul Vassallo, hailed from Qormi, where he married an English woman before moving to Bootle in the UK.

Reflecting on the experience during the Stick to Football podcast, Jamie shared his pride in seeing his son feature in both matches.
“Started both games,” the former England international said. “Wasn’t sure he would, it was his first time he’s been there.
“The first game they played Finland, should have got something out of it, played really well second half. Got beat 1-0 and then went to Poland away [lost 2-0].”

When asked by former England women’s international Jill Scott whether he traveled to Poland to watch the match, Jamie humorously replied: “Oh yeah, we had a proper trip, the Carraghers on tour.”
He admitted that while he wasn’t particularly nervous, his father was feeling the pressure: “I wasn’t nervous, but I could see my dad was a bit nervous before,” Jamie revealed.
“It was a big game, 50,000 there. And what do you do when you’re nervous? You have a drink. But no, it was good. I wanted [Robert] Lewandowski to start, but he came on. He did alright.”
Ian Wright then quizzed Carragher about whether his son managed to get Lewandowski’s shirt, to which Jamie proudly confirmed: “He did actually. He was up against him at the end, in the last 20 minutes.”

James Carragher, who plays for Wigan Athletic, will be back in club action this Saturday as his side hosts Barnsley in League One.
