Last month, the Corradino Sports Complex in Malta played host to one of the most thrilling powerlifting events of the year – the SBD Malta Cup 2025.
The event was organised in honour of the first anniversary of SBD Apparel, the renowned gym apparel company, operating in Malta, the event was a resounding success, drawing athletes, fans, and powerlifting enthusiasts from all over Malta and Gozo.
The competition was nothing short of spectacular, with a considerable number of national records shattered across various weight classes and categories.
The atmosphere was electric, fueled by the incredible performances of the athletes and the enthusiastic support of the crowd.
The women’s category showcased extraordinary strength and determination. The top three finishers were Ghalia Al Waheeb who topped the standings with an impressive score of 40% over the national record.
Laura Chetcuti Dimech placed second with a score of 28% over the national record
Maria Farrugia completed the podium with a score of 14% over the national mark.
These athletes delivered awe-inspiring performances, setting new benchmarks for powerlifting in Malta.
The men’s division was equally competitive, with athletes pushing their limits to claim the top spots.
Alessandro Gatt completed a dominant victory, recording a score of 13% over the national record.
Matthew Mifsud took the runners-up spot with a score of 8% over the national standard while Benjamin Sacco with a score of 7% over the national record.
Each lifter demonstrated incredible strength and technique, making the competition a thrilling spectacle for all in attendance.
Adding to the excitement of the event was the presence of Joe Whiteley, a renowned International Powerlifting Federation (IPF) commentator, who kept the crowd engaged and energized throughout the day.

The SBD Malta Cup 2025 was not just a competition but also a celebration of SBD’s first year of operations in Malta. The event highlighted the brand’s commitment to supporting the powerlifting community and promoting the sport’s growth on the island.
With such a successful event, the bar has been set high for next year. The organisers are already looking forward to the 2026 edition of the SBD Malta Cup.
