Malta water polo national team coach Cirovic resigns

Milan Cirovic has resigned from his positions as Malta water polo national team head coach and technical director of men’s water polo.

The Aquatic Sports Association announced the decision in a statement, and it comes just a few months after the water polo national team secured an historic 13th placing in the European Championships in Belgrade and a 10th placing in the World Cup Division II, which were held in Malta.

During this time, several national team players were put under investigation following revelations of betting activity involving players and individuals connected to the national team and domestic clubs.

The World Aquatics are currently investigating the case, which could see a number of national players as well as others in the domestic league facing betting charges from the world governing body.

“The Aquatic Sports Association of Malta (ASA) announces that Mr. Milan Cirovic has tendered his resignation from his positions as Senior Men’s National Team Head Coach and Technical Director of Maltese Men’s Water Polo,” the statement said.

“Cirovic’s decision has been received with great regret by the ASA Executive, who would like to place on record its sincere gratitude for his outstanding contribution to Maltese water polo during his tenure.

“Under his leadership, the national programme continued its upward trajectory, achieving historic milestones and further strengthening Malta’s reputation on the international stage.

Since his appointment, Mr. Cirovic has played a pivotal role in the professional development of Malta’s national water polo structures, overseeing not only the Senior Men’s National Team but also contributing significantly to the development of youth programmes and the wider technical framework of the sport in Malta.”

ASA president Karl Izzo expressed his disappointment at the sudden departure of Cirovic.

“Milan’s resignation is a decision we respect, although it is one we receive with genuine sadness,” Izzo said.

“He has been instrumental in raising standards across our national teams and has left an indelible mark on Maltese water polo.

“His professionalism, dedication, and technical expertise have contributed significantly to some of the most successful years in our recent history.

“On behalf of the ASA Executive, our athletes, staff, and the wider water polo community, I thank Milan for his exceptional service and wish him every success in his future endeavours.”

The ASA said it will immediately commence the process of identifying and appointing a successor to ensure continuity and stability as Malta prepares for an important period of international competition, including upcoming youth and senior championships.
