FIA chief Ben Sulayem receives re-election boost

Mohammed Ben Sulayem’s prospects for gaining a second term as president of the International Motoring Federation (FIA) received a boost on Thursday with reports that he has strong support from member clubs and associations.

According to widespread and respected sources within the Formula One paddock, including Autosport.com, 37 representatives of national organisations signed a letter to “strongly encourage” Ben Sulayem to seek re-election in December.

Release of the letter, in both Spanish and English, comes on the eve of the Spanish Grand Prix and only weeks after Williams driver Carlos Sainz said his father, two-time world rally champion Carlos Sainz Sr, was considering standing for election as president.

Ben Sulayem’s presidency has been punctuated by controversy following the resignations of several of the FIA’s key senior staff and his moves to ban all swearing by Formula One drivers.
