Darren Abdilla has parted ways with Floriana FC and the Greens are set to announce a new head coach in the next few hours, the Times of Malta can confirm.
Abdilla took over the reins at Floriana FC at the start of the season and led the club to a very strong campaign which saw them finish top of the 360 Sports Premier Opening round and then reach the Top Four semi-finals.
But their dream of winning the title was ended by champions Ħamrun Spartans who beat them in a penalty shoot-out after their semi-final ended in a goalless draw.
Floriana went on to finish third after beating Sliema Wanderers in a play-off to ensure a return to European football.
Added to that, Floriana reached the semi-finals of the FA Trophy and were beaten by Birkirkara who ended their hopes of silverware.ż
In a statement, Abdilla thanked the Floriana top hierarchy for the past season.
“Thank You, Floriana FC, my journey stops here,” Abdilla wrote in a post on his social media page.
“I want to express my deepest gratitude to everyone at this glorious club. It has been an honour to lead Floriana FC — a journey filled with passion, pride, and unforgettable memories.
“This season was undeniably tough, but it came with so many valuable lessons.
“The pain of how close we came will stay with me, not because we failed, but because of how much this team gave, and how deeply we believed. Unfortunately, it just wasn’t meant to be.
“To the players, staff, supporters, management, committee, Armata Ħadra Furjaniża, Floriana Supporters Club and the entire Floriana family: thank you for your trust, your support, and for allowing me the privilege to lead this club. I will always carry this experience with pride in my heart.”
On their part Floriana FC paid tribute to Abdilla.
“Floriana FC extends its deepest gratitude to Head Coach Darren Abdilla for his exceptional leadership, professionalism and commitment throughout his time at the club,” the club said in a statement.
“Under his guidance, the team secured a third-place finish in the Malta Premier League and a qualifying spot for the UEFA Europa Conference League.
“We wish him the very best in his future endeavours, both on and off the pitch.”
