Maltese Hillclimb driver Zach Zammit was at Shelsley Walsh competing in the 5th round of the British Hillclimb Championship and the 4th round of the Midland Hillclimb Championship last week.
The weather is never favourable for a Maltese driver in the United Kingdom. On Saturday, it was damp during the first run and wet during the second run. On Sunday, it was mostly dry with scattered rain now and then.
Zammit suffered a problem with the gearbox all weekend but managed to work around it for all the runs till on the last timed run, a backfire bent a throttle body blade and had to retire the car.
Zammit still won the class with his first timed run, qualified in the first run, and managed eighth fastest in that run-off.
He didn’t qualify for the second runoff only because he retired.
Despite the mechanical problems, Zammit still sounded upbeat.
“The better news is that the car upgrades we brought to the event worked perfectly and now we have eliminated the issue we had in the straights. We managed 137mph on the finish line, our first,” Zammit said.
Presently, Zammit is the British top 12 run-off driver and the 15th overall by doing only two of the first five rounds.
In the Midland Hillclimb Championship, Zammit is second in class… excellent results considering that Zammit is not doing all the rounds like most of the drivers.
Jacob Micallef shines in European Karting Championship
Last week, Maltese karting driver Jacob Micallef was in Viterbo in Lazio, Italy, to compete in the FIA European Karting Championship.
Micallef had his best result so far in his racing career by finishing 3rd in this round of the championship amongst the best international karting drivers racing in his category.
Micallef’s next appointment is set for Wackesdolf in Germany between June 27 and 29.
