Valletta announced the signing of promising defender Mattias Ellul.

The 20-year-old arrives at the capital club after parting ways with Malta champions Ħamrun Spartans.

Ellul is seen as one of the most promising defenders in Maltese football and last season formed part of the Ħamrun Spartans squad that managed to win a third successive league title, after defeating Birkirkara in the final.

Ellul came through the youth ranks of Luxol St Andrews and in 2023 decided to join Santa Lucia.

Last summer, Ellul made the move to Ħamrun Spartans, where he was a regular member of the team as he not only played a key part in their European adventure in the Champions League and the Conference but was instrumental in the Opening Round.

Here, Ellul managed to collect 11 appearances and provided one assist.

However, the departure of head coach Alessandro Zinnari and the arrival of new coach Winston Muscat hit his hopes of playing regular football.

This is because during the Closing Round, Ellul made just four appearances.

At the end of the season, the 20-year-old decided to leave the Spartans and seek more regular football with another Premier League club.

Valletta soon came calling, and Ellul managed to take his release from Ħamrun Spartans and agree personal terms with the Citizens, where he is hoping to play a key role on their return to the top-flight.

On a post on his facebook page, Mattias Ellul thanked Ħamrun Spartans for their support last season and wished them well for the future.

Ellul is Valletta’s fourth signing this summer after Brazilian goalkeeper Adilson Maringa, defender Shaft Brewer and midfielder Yannick Yankam.
