Watch: Malta women’s U-18 national team outlast Romania in positional play-offs at Euros

Aurelien Cousin’s girls face Czechia in play-off for 13th place

The Malta women’s U-18 national team bagged their third win at the European Championships when they eased past Romania 12-9 in the positional play-offs at the National Pool.

It was another clinical performance from Aurelien Cousin’s girls, who took control from the match early on and from then on managed to administer their advantage and set up a showdown with Czecha in a play-off for 13th place on Friday.

Chloe Amato and Kaylen Cutajar were the team’s leading scorers with a hat-trick apiece.

The Maltese girls were off to a fast start and surged into a 3-1 lead by the end of the first session.

Chloe Amato bagged a brace, with the other goal coming from Kaylen Cutajar.

The second session turned out to be much tighter as the Romanians tried to pull themselves back into the match.

However, it was the Maltese who came out on top in a five-goal thriller to head into the half-time interval 6-3 ahead.

Ella Miceli managed to find the target twice, with the other goal coming from Elisa Amato.

Romania tried to revive its hopes in the third session, and managed to move just one goal behind at 9-8. However, a Kaylen Cutajar goal with less than two seconds to go ensured the hosts started the final session 9-7 ahead.

The other scorers for Malta in the third session were Mia Clarke Spiteri, and a brace by Eyla Schembri.

In the final session, the Maltese were quick out of the blocks and goals from Nevise Agius and Chloe Amato put them 11-7 ahead.

That quick double strike took the fight out of the Romanians and late goals from Chloe Amato and Kaylen Cutajar sealed another excellent day for the women’s U-18 national team.
