Mġarr United continued their impressive run in the Assikura Women’s League, securing their sixth consecutive victory.

The Greens launched their second round commitments with a comeback victory over champions Swieqi United, whom they had already defeated in the opening day.

Mġarr have now opened a six-point lead at the top of the championship.

The Owls, on their part, had overcame the Greens in September’s Super Cup to lift the first silverware of the season.

It was Swieqi who opened the score through a Sara Saliba penalty, just past the half-hour mark.

However, Mġarr scored three times without reply after the break. Amber Grech levelled terms while the Villegas sisters – Valeria and Alejandra – scored a goal each to seal the win.

Hibernians joined Swieqi in second place on 12 points after a 3-0 win over San Ġwann.

Starring for the Paolites was Uganda international Sylvia Kabene who grabbed a hat-trick on her debut.

Before the match, club captain Nicole Sciberras was presented a memento for her 100th appearance in domestic competitions.

Meanwhile, Birkirkara eased past Valletta with Japanese player Momo Ueda scoring a hat-trick herself.

The Stripes are now on nine points after their third win of the season.

Perfect Mġarr eye seventh straight win against Valletta

The Assikura Women’s League resumes on Thursday, October 16, with a highly anticipated clash between Hibernians and Birkirkara opening the week’s fixtures.

Hibernians, currently second in the standings, will look to keep the pressure on leaders Mġarr United with another positive result.

The Paolites will be bolstered by the arrival of Sylvia Kabene, the Ugandan forward who made an instant impact with a hat-trick on her senior debut against San Ġwann.

Their opponents, Birkirkara, sit three points behind on nine and could draw level with Hibs with a victory. The Stripes will rely on Japanese attacker Momo Ueda, who has already netted four goals since her summer move to the club.

Meanwhile, Mġarr United aim to extend their perfect start to seven straight wins when they take on Valletta. The Greens have been in scintillating form, securing two impressive victories over last season’s champions Swieqi United, and will once again look to Valeria Villegas, who has scored five goals so far.

At the other end, Valletta are still seeking their first win of the season, having collected just one point to date.

In the final fixture, Swieqi United will be determined to bounce back from their defeat to Mġarr when they face San Ġwann. The Owls will count on league top scorer Salamatu Abdulai, who leads the charts with seven goals. San Ġwann, like Valletta, are on one point and will be hoping to cause an upset.
