Watford hired Javi Gracia for a second spell as manager on Wednesday after the Championship side sacked Paulo Pezzolano just 10 games into his reign.
Pezzolano was appointed in May to replace Tom Cleverley, but the Uruguayan got off to a rocky start this term despite signing 13 players in the summer transfer window.
Watford lie in 11th spot having won only three of their opening nine league matches, although Pezzolano’s last three games had yielded seven points including beating strugglers Oxford before the international break.
Gracia returns to Vicarage Road having left in September 2019 after he guided Watford to the FA Cup final at Wembley, where they lost 6-0 to Manchester City, as well as finishing 11th in the Premier League.
The Spaniard is Watford’s 12th manager since his departure six years ago.
“Watford FC are delighted to confirm the return of Javi Gracia as head coach after deciding to part ways with Paulo Pezzolano and his backroom staff, whom we thank sincerely for their efforts and commitment during their time in charge,” a statement said.
Gracia, whose first game as Watford boss will come against Sheffield United on October 18, was sacked by Leeds in May 2023, having been in charge for only 12 games.
The 55-year-old’s first spell at Watford lasted for 20 months, which ranked as the longest by any Hornets boss in the past 14 years.
