Watch: Qala Saints president Noel Mizzi, Nadur coach Paul Azzopardi handed one-year ban after scuffle

Scuffles broke out during the GFA Division One clash between Nadur Youngsters and Qala Saints.

Incident sparked after Nadur player Joseph Xerri was allegedly subjected to racist abuse

Qala Saints president Noel Mizzi and Paul Azzopardi, a member of Nadur Youngsters’ coaching staff, were handed a one-year suspension by the GFA Disciplinary Commissioner after they were involved in a scuffle during last weekend’s Division One match between the two rivals.

The incident was sparked at 73 minutes when Nadur player Joseph Xerri was shown a straight red card for a rushed challenge.

Nadur Youngsters are contending that on his way to the dressing room, Xerri had to pass in front of the Qala Saints bench, where he was directed with racial comments from a Saints’ official.

Here, a scuffle broke out that involved Mizzi and Azzopardi, and the police had to intervene to restore order.

At the end of the match, Nadur Youngsters issued a statement condemning the incident.

“During yesterday’s win against Qala Saints our Joseph Xerri was subjected to racial abuse from an opposing club official on the bench,” the statement said.

“Nadur Youngsters FC condemns all forms of racism and discrimination.

“We stay firmly behind you, Josephy, and we promise this matter will not go unnoticesd.

“Racism has no place in football on or off the pitch.”

The incident was analysed by the Disciplinary Commissioner who decided to hand Mizzi and Azzopardi a one-year suspension, which will see them banned until October 6, 2026.

Nadur Youngsters won the match 1-0.
