The John Tabone Shield returned for another round of fixtures at the Ta’ Qali Pavilion on Sunday.
In a repeat of the previous weekend, Starlites Revive bagged an emphatic victory, this time at the expense of Luxol Sherries Estates, while Athleta AtoZ made amends for their day one defeat to Hibernians as they overcame Valletta Dream.

Starlites maintained their impressive form in the Shield, producing another commanding display that left Luxol well behind by the final buzzer.
Fresh from a comfortable win over The Plaza Depiro the week before, the reigning Knockout holders again combined pace, poise, and precision to take full control from the early stages.
With two convincing victories to open their Shield campaign, Starlites look every bit the early benchmark of the competition.
Jackson Threadgill anchored the effort with 21 efficient points on 50% shooting.
Travis Fee’s all-round energy and a strong rebounding presence under both boards complemented Musa Jallow’s power inside, while Jayden Iturmendi dictated the tempo with relentless movement and mid-range accuracy. Ian Felice Pace, Miguel Fabri, and Matthew Scerri offered steady outside support, helping the Naxxar side convert turnovers into instant points.
Luxol, making their season debut, leaned heavily on Jayden Johnson’s prolific scoring to keep them competitive through the opening half. Nathan Xuereb and Miguel Brincat chipped in with determined drives and perimeter touches, but lapses in transition defence left them exposed as coach Paul Ferrante’s clan’s chemistry began to tell.
Iturmendi’s early baskets gave Starlites the initiative before Johnson replied with a step-back jumper. Felice Pace’s and-one, and triples from Fabri and Scerri ensured the first quarter ended with a modest advantage.
In the second quarter, the Violets briefly found rhythm through Brincat, Johnson, and Xuereb, yet Fee and Jallow soon reasserted control, combining to push the margin firmly in Starlites’ favour by the interval as the Naxxar side led by nine points.
The contest tilted decisively after half-time. Fee opened with a three-pointer, and Threadgill, Fabri, and Jallow piled on with a sequence of fast-break finishes that widened the gap beyond recovery. Luxol’s turnovers mounted, and Starlites’ quick outlet passing punished every mistake.
There was no easing off in the final rubber as Threadgill continued to drive at will, the show involving a Jallow alley-oop dunk. Iturmendi added a pair of crisp jumpers and a late three to underline the gulf in execution, with substitute Kai Fabri joining the scoring surge.
Johnson’s persistence yielded further points for coach Duncan Fenech’s Luxol, but his efforts could only narrow the margin slightly as Starlites closed out another emphatic win.

ATHLETA ATOZ 95
VALLETTA DREAM 86
(32-26, 15-25, 28-19, 20-16)
Athleta returned to winning ways, producing a confident and controlled display to overcome Valletta and banish memories of their opening-day defeat to Hibernians.
The victory was built on speed in transition and unselfish ball movement, qualities that re-emerged after a nervy start to the competition.
Duane Goodman Jr spearheaded the attack with 18 points, mixing power and finesse to spark decisive scoring bursts. Wesley Jordan was a force in the paint with 33 points and constant activity on the boards for a double-double, while Isaac Bonett provided timely outside shooting and steady free-throw work.
Robert Vitale orchestrated the tempo with seven assists and several composed drives, as Athleta’s core regained its fluency. Juan Cefai’s energy landed him a 13 point-11 rebound double double that helped the team maintain control whenever Valletta threatened.
For the Citizens, it was a tough initiation to both the Shield and the new season. New signing Eugene Campbell impressed with a tireless 39-point performance, mixing long-range accuracy with mid-range touch to land 50% of his three-point shots and close to that from inside the arc.
Nikola Vasovic offered valuable support through his shooting and rebounding to finish as the second-best scorer for the side. Yet despite flashes of rhythm, Valletta struggled to contain Athleta’s interior dominance and transition pace.
The game opened at a frantic pace. Campbell struck early for Valletta, but Bonett’s three-point play and Vitale’s quick cuts helped Athleta settle. Jordan’s presence inside became a growing factor, his put-backs and fast-break finishes giving Athleta a small cushion by the end of the first quarter despite a brief lead by the Capital club midway through the rubber.
The Gzira-based side built on that momentum in the second quarter. Jordan and Cefai combined on successive drives to push the margin to double figures before Campbell’s accuracy and Vasovic’s perimeter touch trimmed the gap. A late Valletta surge even carried them in front heading into the half with a four-point lead.
The third quarter proved pivotal. Cefai’s early baskets tied the game, and Goodman’s determination inside pushed the game towards Athleta. A three-pointer from Luca Borg and another from Goodman capped a powerful spell that left Valletta chasing.
Campbell continued to respond, keeping the margin manageable with a series of difficult jumpers, but Athleta’s composure told in key moments.
The final battle was a show of strength by Sandro Farrugia’s Athleta clan. Goodman’s drives, Jordan’s consistency near the rim, and jumpers from Cefai and Borg on the break sealed the outcome. Valletta fought to the end, with Campbell’s scoring binge ensuring respectability and Charles Bronson adding late baskets, but Athleta’s renewed balance and collective energy were too much to overcome.
ATHLETA ATOZ: S. Ebelashvili 2, R. Vitale 11, I. Bonett 13, D. Goodman JR 18, L. Borg 5, J. Cefai 13, W. Jordan 33.
