Maltese football is mourning the passing of former Valletta FC and Malta defender Louis Pace, aged 77.
Pace will be fondly remembered as a solid defender who plied his trade in the 1970s and was handed the opportunity to don the national team’s jersey five times.
Pace made his debut for Valletta in January 1966 and went on to win the league title with the Capital club in season 1973-74 and the Cassar Cup.
Among his five appearances with the national team, one that is singled out is the European Championship qualifier against England at Wembley Stadium which saw the Three Lions prevail 5-0.
Valletta FC issued a statement to honour the memory of Pace.
“Valletta Football Club is deeply saddened by the passing of Louis Pace, who proudly wore the Lilywhites shirt between 1966 and 1974, winning both the Cassar Cup and the First Division Championship in 1973-74 – the club’s first league title in 11 years,” the club said.
“A true leader on and off the pitch, Louis captained Valletta in the memorable UEFA Cup match against Inter of Italy, representing the Club with pride on the European stage.
“He also had the honour of representing Malta, further reflecting his dedication and passion for the game.
“We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, including his son Beppe Pace, who continued his father’s legacy by representing Valletta during the late 1990s and early 2000s.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with the Pace family and loved ones during this difficult time.”
Valletta FC president Claudio Grech described Louis Pace as a true club legend and a role model for the club’s youth players.
“Last night, Valletta Football Club lost one of its greats,” Grech wrote.
“Louis Pace was not just a player – he was a symbol of what wearing the Lilywhite shirt truly means.
“He made his senior debut for Valletta at just 17 years old, stepping onto the pitch with courage, humility, and an unshakeable love for the badge.
“From that day in 1966, Louis went on to give everything he had to this Club – winning the Cassar Cup, lifting the First Division Championship in 1974, and leading Valletta as captain in our historic UEFA Cup tie against Inter. He also wore the Malta shirt with pride, representing his country with the same discipline and passion that defined his career.
“Louis’s story is not just one to remember – it’s one to learn from.
“To every young player in our Club: Louis showed that age is never a barrier when heart, attitude, and commitment lead the way. At 17, he wasn’t just given a chance – he earned it through character, effort, and respect for the shirt.
“His journey reminds us that being Valletta is not only about talent. It’s about values – leadership, loyalty, and the quiet strength of those who serve their team before themselves.
“On behalf of Valletta Football Club, I extend our heartfelt condolences to the Pace family, especially his son Beppe, who proudly continued his father’s legacy in our colours. Our thoughts and prayers are with them all in this moment of loss.”
Louis Pace’s name will remain forever etched in Valletta’s history – a 17-year-old who became a leader, a champion, and an example for generations to come.
Rest in peace, Louis. The City salutes you.
