Hibs crush Valletta as Luxol cruise past Depiro into John Tabone’s Shield semi-finals

The group stage of this season’s John Tabone Shield came to an end last weekend with dominant displays by Hibernians and Luxol Sherries Estates that swept aside the challenge of Valletta Dream and The Plaza Depiro respectively.

Luxol will now face Hibs, while Starlites play Athleta AtoZ in the final four of the competition.

Hibernians underlined their credentials as Shield favourites with a commanding victory over Valletta in their most complete performance of the season.

The Paolites’ trademark balance was on full display as seven players finished in double figures, comfortably surpassing their competition averages. Ivan Demcesen, Deonte Jackson and Ayomide Ajiboye all produced efficient scoring bursts inside and out, while Elijah Simmons continued his strong early form after averaging 14.5 points through the opening rounds.

Neil Cassar’s control in transition and the sharp perimeter work of Matthew Attard and Matthew Gouder kept the offence fluid, with Piotr Stelmach and Luke Farrugia adding valuable minutes from the bench.

Hibs opened with a quick tempo, pressing high and punishing every turnover. Cassar set the tone with a fast-break lay-up, quickly followed by an Ajiboye three-pointer.

Within four minutes, the visitors led 11–0 and Valletta were already chasing shadows. Francesco Mifsud Bonnici and Eugene Campbell offered brief resistance with a series of drives that kept the score respectable, but Attard’s smooth three-ball and freethrows ensured Hibernians closed the first spell 29-14 ahead.

The second quarter only deepened the gulf. Simmons and Gouder combined on a decisive 15-2 run, their outside shooting matched by transition layups from Stelmach and Attard. Cassar orchestrated the pace with composure, repeatedly finding open teammates as the Paolites stretched the margin beyond twenty.

By half-time, with Simmons dominating the paint, the contest had effectively been settled at 52-24.

After the change of ends, Jackson and Demcesen took turns dismantling Valletta’s defence. Jackson drilled a trio of three-pointers in quick succession, while Demcesen’s presence on the boards created countless second-chance opportunities.

Simmons’ soaring dunk midway through the period capped a 22-6 surge that pushed the advantage past forty, and even as Campbell and Nikola Vasovic found the target for Valletta, the response was instant.

Attard and Gouder answered from deep before Demcesen’s lay-up made it 94-44 entering the final stretch.

Christian Narciso’ Hibs showed no sign of easing up.

Cassar, Ajiboye and Attard combined to extend the lead beyond fifty, and Farrugia’s pair of late three-pointers sealed the emphatic finish. Campbell’s determination yielded a personal tally of 35 points, but it was a solitary highlight against a collective masterclass.

With a 63-point margin and seven double-digit scorers, Hibernians advance to the semi-finals brimming with confidence and a clear statement of intent that few in the competition will ignore.

Luxol secured the last semi-final berth of the Shield with a confident win over Depiro, producing a balanced and composed performance that restored momentum after last week’s defeat against Starlites Revive.

Malta international Nathan Xuereb led the way with 19 points, while Burke Smith and Jayden Johnson provided consistent scoring support inside and out.

The Violets’ offensive rhythm and disciplined defence helped them maintain control across all four quarters, comfortably outperforming their season averages in points and efficiency. For Depiro, Stefanovic and Turner both finished with 13 points, but their efforts could not stem Luxol’s steady scoring and rebounding dominance throughout.

The opening quarter saw Luxol shake off early nerves after a Cameron Cornelius three-pointer gave Depiro the first lead. Smith and Connor James responded with quick baskets before Xuereb struck from deep to ignite Luxol’s offence.

Johnson then found his touch, adding two baskets in quick succession as Luxol settled into a seven-point cushion. Despite free throws from Turner and Cornelius, Luxol’s size advantage in the paint began to tell, and Smith’s second-chance points closed the first period 19–12 in their favour.

Luxol’s momentum carried through the second quarter. Turner attempted to rally Depiro with a pair of driving layups, yet Johnson’s composed free-throw shooting and Smith’s transition finishes pushed the gap into double digits.

Xuereb remained influential, drilling his second three-pointer before Johnson added another from distance to stretch the margin to 15. Depiro’s inside pair of Miovan Grubacic and Stefanovic offered brief resistance late in the half, but Duncan Fenech’s Luxol still entered the break leading 33-22.

Depiro, led by coach Norbert Borg on the day, found some rhythm early in the third rubber through free throws from Turner and Galea, and Cornelius’ layup momentarily trimmed the deficit.

However, Smith’s dunks and Tomasi’s putbacks reignited Luxol’s attack. When Xuereb’s driving layup and bonus free throw completed a 21-11 quarter, the advantage rose to 54-40.

The fourth quarter mirrored the earlier pattern – Miguel Brincat’s back-to-back three-pointers against his former side and Xuereb’s sharp shooting from both far and close-range effectively sealed the result.

Though Stefanovic and Turner continued to battle, Depiro could not find the defensive stops required to close the gap.

Johnson’s late triple and Tomasi’s five quick points capped a convincing all-round display as Luxol cruised to a 22-point win.
