Patrizia Panico, Italy’s best-ever scorer for the women’s selection, has joined the Malta women’s national team coaching staff.
She will be joined by Herman Bugeja, another latest addition to Manuela Tesse’s coaching setup.
Panico, who holds the UEFA Pro license, will be joining as Technical Advisor of the women’s national team, while Bugeja, who is Head of Coach Education at the Malta FA, has been named assistant coach of thesenior selection.
The former Italy player is a well-known name in women’s football, having amassed 204 caps for the Azzurre, scoring 110 goals in the process, the nation’s all-time top goalscorer.
During her 23-year career in Italian football, she played for clubs such as Lazio, Torres, and Bardolino among others. She was named in the Italian Football Hall of Fame in 2015, having won numerous honours during her career, including the top scorer accolade of the Italian top-flight on five occasions.
Following her retirement, she transitioned to coaching, joining the Italian FA, becoming the first female to coach to take over a men’s national team in 2018, when she took over the U15s side. In 2021, she was named coach of Fiorentina Women, and last season served as assistant coach of the women’s football powerhouse Olympique Lyon.
