Karl Izzo reconfirmed as ASA president for the next three years

Karl Izzo has been reconfirmed as president of the Aquatic Sports Association of Malta for the next three years after he won a strong vote of approval of 82 per cent from the delegates present in the governing body’s annual general meeting.

Izzo had been in charge of the ASA for the past three years and worked hard to put the sport of waterpolo, swimming, open water swimming, and artistic swimming on much stronger foundations.

“I am really grateful to have been entrusted with this prestigious role of ASA president for the next three years by the member delegates,” Izzo told the Times of Malta.

“During the past three years, I have worked really hard together with my administrative team to put all four disciplines on stronger foundations. However, we are not yet ready, and we are determined to continue working harder to elevate our association to higher levels.

“It’s not easy to be in charge of an association that is formed by four sporting disciplines. It brings a lot of responsibility, but I feel privileged to be given the chance to lead this association. With the cooperation of everyone, we managed to achieve what was seen as unthinkable in the past.”

Izzo said that as his manifesto shows, his main aim in the coming months is to modernise the Aquatic Sports Association of Malta even further.

“The biggest change I am planning to do is that we set up a Bureau that will amalgamate the ASA Council and the Executive Committee, which will reduce the level of bureaucracy and increase efficiency,” Izzo said.

“We will set up an Athletes Association that will provide a stronger voice to our athletes and introduce a Licence Framework for coaches to help them improve their knowledge. We will introduce a more transparent disciplinary process that is more aligned with the European Aquatics.

“Added to that, we will be working hard to attract more youngsters to all our disciplines and help the nurseries to be on a stronger foundation. We are keen to help the clubs become more financially sustainable and ensure Malta continues to host the best international tournaments.

“We have a long and hard road ahead, but I am confident that with the administrative team that I have, we will continue to put aquatic sport on stronger foundations and bring more success for our country.”
