Sirens ASC women’s team to take part in Nordic Waterpolo League qualifiers

Malta women’s champions Sirens will be taking part in the qualifying round of the Nordic waterpolo League this weekend.

The St Paul’s Bay outfit has been drawn in Group A and will be up against KAZSc Antwerp, of Belgium, British side KKAS Water Polo, and Lazio Nuoto, of Italy.

Sirens’ participation in the prestigious competition came about after, earlier this year, the Maltese side hosted the tournament final at their own pool in St Paul’s Bay.

The Nordic League organisers were so pleased by Sirens’ organisation that last May, they sent a letter of invitation to the Maltese club to take part in this month’s qualifiers.

For Sirens, this will be their second participation in an international tournament in a few months, after last October they took part in the qualifying tournament of the Conference Cup.

Here, the St Paul’s Bay side found the going tough against stronger opponents in Greek sides AC Paok, NC Chania and Dutch side ZVL-1886. However, it was another valuable learning curve for the young Sirens squad against stronger opponents.

It is the Northern Waterpolo League’s mission statement to bring together in the same league clubs from all and countries and levels, from amateur clubs to semi-professional teams and help them to continue their development on the international stage.

Sirens, who are under the charge of coach Edward Aquilina, will again bank on the same squad of players that featured in the Conference Cup qualifiers.
