January 2026 will bring with it the introduction of an important event as Malta will host a women’s club tournament featuring four high-level teams from three European countries.
VfL Wolfsburg, winners of the UEFA Women’s Champions League in 2013 and 2014, will join another German Frauen-Bundesliga team, TSG 1899 Hoffenheim, as well as PSV Vrouwen from the Netherlands and FC Basel from Switzerland, in the first edition of the VisitMalta Women Club Trophy.
The tournament will be held across two matchdays, scheduled for January 11 and 14, 2026, with all matches taking place at the National Stadium. During this same period, the four teams will also conduct a training camp in Malta.
While the 2026 edition will be the first of the VisitMalta Women Club Trophy, several women’s national teams have participated in editions of the VisitMalta International Women’s Tournament or friendly matches in recent years. These include the national teams of Sweden, the Netherlands, Austria, Slovakia, Belarus, Albania, Moldova, Morocco, the Faroe Islands, and Malta.
More than 50 football teams are expected to organise training camps in Malta in 2026. These will include a mix of men’s and women’s professional clubs, as well as amateur teams, the majority coming from Switzerland and the Netherlands.
