Tributes flow as Hibs Football Academy coach and administrator John Calleja dies

The Hibernians FC community is mourning the death of former coach and administrator John Calleja.

Calleja has been a cornerstone at the Hibernians football academy where he worked with several young players over the years and his influence was a major factor behind the success of the football academy.

“It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of John Calleja,” the Hibernians Football Academy said in a statement.

“John was a beloved and a long-serving member of our academy. His dedication, passion, and commitment over the years have left an indelible mark on all of us. He was not only a mentor but also a friend to many, and his legacy will continue to inspire future generations.

“We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family and friends during this difficult time. May you find comfort in the love and support that surrounds you.

“Rest in peace, John. You will be greatly missed but never forgotten.”

Hibernians forward Jurgen Degabriele also posted a short tribute to Calleja.

“Rest in peace, Mr Calleja,” Degabriele wrote.

“Thank you for everything you have done with me and many other children. You will be missed.”

Hibernians skipper Bjorn Kristensen also posted a touching tribute to John Calleja.

“Sur Calleja, You dedicated your life to the youth of football in Malta,” Kristensen said.

“Not just shaping future players, but shaping strong characters, values, and great human beings.

“Your passion, guidance, and belief in young people went far beyond the pitch. You taught discipline, respect, teamwork, and perseverance, leaving a lasting mark on everyone fortunate enough to learn from you.

“You will be deeply missed, Sur Calleja.”

    A great person, teacher and coach. I was lucky enough to have him as my academic tutor and football coach more than three decades ago. He will be truly missed by many. RIP.
