Mġarr United continued their relentless march at the top with a dominant 5-0 win over Birkirkara, underlining the gap that has opened up in the title race in the Assikura Women’s League.

A clinical display saw goals from Leanne Cefai, a brace by Valeria Villegas, Yulya Carella and Amber Grech, as Mġarr controlled proceedings from start to finish. The leaders were sharp in possession, aggressive without the ball, and never allowed Birkirkara a foothold, extending their advantage at the summit to a commanding 11 points.

The battle behind them remains finely balanced after Swieqi United and Hibernians played out a 2–2 draw in an entertaining contest.

Swieqi struck through Andjela Kricak, but Hibernians responded with goals from Sylvia Kabene and Chisha Zulu before the Owls levelled matters through Ema Micallef.

The result keeps Swieqi second on 29 points, just one ahead of Hibernians.

At the other end of the table, Valletta and San Ġwann produced a goal-packed 4-4 draw, a chaotic but thrilling encounter.

Ines Mohamed grabbed a brace for Valletta, alongside goals from Shakira Bugeja and Joelma, while Morena Fanega stole the show for San Ġwann with a hat-trick, supported by Rodianne Zerafa.

Despite the eight-goal spectacle, neither side made significant progress, remaining rooted to the bottom two places.

STANDINGS (after MD14)

Mġarr United 40, Swieqi United 29, Hibernians 28, Birkirkara 16, San Ġwann 5, Valletta 2.

Key test for leaders Mġarr as they close in on title

The upcoming round of Assikura Women’s League promises intrigue across the table, with key clashes spread over three days and implications at both ends of the standings.

Thursday sees a heavyweight encounter as Hibernians host leaders Mġarr United at the Centenary Stadium (8.15pm).
Mġarr arrive in formidable form after their emphatic five-goal win last matchday, but Hibernians have already shown they can compete with the league’s top sides.

With just one point separating Hibs from second place, this fixture could be decisive in shaping the title race and the battle immediately behind the leaders.

On Friday, attention shifts to the Victor Tedesco Stadium where San Ġwann take on Birkirkara (8.30pm).

Birkirkara will be keen to respond after a heavy defeat to Mġarr, while San Ġwann are searching for momentum following an entertaining yet frustrating draw against Valletta.

The round concludes on Saturday with Swieqi United facing Valletta at the Charles Abela Stadium (6pm).

Swieqi will look to capitalise on Hibernians’ tough assignment and strengthen their hold on second place, while Valletta are desperate to turn performances into points after another high-scoring draw. On paper, Swieqi start as favourites.
