Sue Mercieca, a lawyer, former television journalist, and sports leader, has formally submitted her application for the position of Secretary General of the Maltese Olympic Committee (MOC).
Mercieca brings with her a career spanning three decades and a track record of governance, communication, and athlete-first leadership.
Sue Mercieca is no stranger to the Olympic Movement.
She served for four years as a Director on the MOC Board, where she led the Legal Commission and managed the Committee’s funding relationship with the International Olympic Committee.
She also served on Malta’s Anti-Doping Disciplinary Board, championing clean sport and fair competition at the national level.
A practising lawyer for over 20 years, Mercieca holds a Doctor of Laws and advanced postgraduate qualifications in conflict resolution and security, complemented by a background in communications.
Her legal expertise is matched by a sharp instinct for public engagement, honed during her years as a TV journalist and newscaster on Maltese national television.
For the past five years, Mercieca has served as Secretary General of Aquahub Malta, where she has led club operations, supported athletes, and coordinated with national and international sporting bodies – a role that has kept her closely connected to the realities of grassroots sport.
She also holds coaching qualifications from both the IAAF and British Swimming, and remains an active athlete herself – competing in ultra marathons and playing squash.
“I bring energy to everything I do, and I don’t shy away from a challenge,” said Mercieca.
“The MOC Secretary General role demands someone who can operate across governance, communication, and strategy simultaneously. I believe my background – across law, media, and sport – makes me uniquely placed to serve the Committee and, most importantly, Malta’s athletes.”
Mercieca’s candidacy will be considered by the Maltese Olympic Committee’s Electoral Commission in the coming weeks.
