Former North Macedonia football chief arrested in fraud case

The former president of North Macedonia’s football federation, Muamed Sejdini, was arrested on Thursday as authorities in the Balkan nation probe allegations of embezzlement.

Both the police and the prosecutor’s office confirmed the arrest on suspicion of “embezzlement” but did not provide details of the alleged crimes.

In February, the Football Federation of Macedonia banned Sejdini from holding positions in its assembly for two years following allegations related to a 3.3 million euro ($3.9 million) contract for the construction of a stand at a stadium in Ohrid.

According to the federation, the deal he allegedly signed without authorisation included a clause for an advanced payment of 700,000 euros ($819,000).

The 56-year-old led the organisation from 2019 until his resignation in 2024.

Prosecutors said the investigation was ongoing and would announce more details when it had concluded.
