Despite remaining in second place, the Spartans now move up to 28 points with one match left to play, strengthening their chances of holding onto that position and avoiding the uncertainty of the Final Four.

Ħamrun Spartans took a significant step towards defending their league crown with a hard-fought victory over Floriana, keeping alive the prospect of a direct one-off final against the Greens for the YoHealth Malta Premier title.

Despite remaining in second place, the Spartans now move up to 28 points with one match left to play, strengthening their chances of holding onto that position and avoiding the uncertainty of the Final Four.

For Floriana, the defeat changes little in the bigger picture. The Greens had already secured top spot in the Closing Round Top Six and will now await confirmation on whether they advance directly to the final or are required to navigate the Final Four format, as was the case last season.

Floriana made the brighter start and threatened early when Rui Areias met a cross with a header, forcing Ħamrun goalkeeper Henry Bonello into a sharp save as he turned the ball behind for a corner.

However, it was Ħamrun who struck first, capitalising on a defensive lapse. Eleke Blessing reacted quickest after a slip in the Floriana backline, seizing the opportunity to give the Spartans the lead.

Floriana responded positively and were handed a route back into the match when Ryan Camenzuli brought down Paul Mbong inside the area. The referee pointed to the spot, and Zack Scerri converted confidently, sending Bonello the wrong way to restore parity.

The equaliser injected fresh intensity into the contest, with Ħamrun pushing forward in search of another goal before the break, but Floriana held firm. The Greens were forced into a change late in the first half when Areias picked up an injury and was replaced by Emerson Piscopo.

Floriana made another adjustment at the interval, introducing Myles Beerman for Paul Mbong, while Ħamrun coach Giacomo Modica also looked to influence proceedings with changes, bringing on Eder and Jonny in a bid to regain attacking impetus.

The second half proved more tactical and fragmented, with both sides making further substitutions, including Jake Grech and Mustapha Jah for Floriana and Kleris Sheber for Ħamrun. Clear-cut chances were at a premium, though Matthew Guillaumier came close for the Spartans with a long-range effort that drifted wide.

As the match progressed, Ħamrun began to assert themselves more decisively. Floriana goalkeeper Pablo Picon was called into action on several occasions, producing a series of saves to keep his side in the game.

The breakthrough eventually arrived when Joseph Mbong rounded Picon and calmly slotted into an empty net to restore Ħamrun’s lead. With Floriana pushing forward in search of another equaliser, spaces began to open up, and Mbong struck again, timing his run to beat the offside trap before finishing clinically.

Ħamrun sealed an emphatic victory deep into stoppage time when Valerio Carboni unleashed a long-range effort that beat Picon, putting the result beyond doubt.
