Seven Maltese clubs granted UEFA licence

The club licensing system, first introduced in 2004, sets out a series of criteria that clubs must meet to be eligible for these competitions.

The UEFA club licence has been granted to seven Maltese clubs, enabling them to participate in UEFA club competitions.

Six of the seven Maltese clubs granted a UEFA club licence are Birkirkara, Floriana, Gżira United, Ħamrun Spartans, Marsaxlokk, and Valletta.

Floriana are expected to contend for the title, whether it is decided by a one-off match or a Final Four format. Ħamrun Spartans – who can face Floriana in a one-off tie, Marsaxlokk, and Valletta could also be involved in a potential Final Four.

Gżira United, meanwhile, have an alternative route to the UEFA Conference League through the FA Trophy, where they will face Valletta in the final.

The seventh club is Mġarr United, who are set to represent Malta in the 2026-2027 UEFA Women’s Champions League.

The Greens enjoyed an outstanding season, winning the league unbeaten to secure their first-ever qualification for European competition. They also lifted the Jubilee Cup and are set to play in Friday’s Assikura Women’s Knockout final.
