Australia to make America’s Cup return

An Australian challenger will compete in the 2027 America’s Cup, almost three decades since their last participation in the event, organisers said on Wednesday.

Australia ended the United States’ 132-year dominance in 1983, widely agreed to be the longest winning streak in sporting history, but their last appearance was in 2000.

“Team Australia, representing the Royal Prince Edward Yacht Club confirmed today their challenge… had been accepted (by holders New Zealand),” a statement said.

Next year’s America’s Cup in Naples, the first since the event switched to a two-year cycle, will include a number of innovations including the necessity to have at least one woman in each crew.

Australia are one of six teams who will compete for the chance to face New Zealand for the trophy, first awarded in 1851.
